Enemy of Cambodian government commentator gets life in prison


A Cambodian court on Thursday imprisoned a previous warrior for life for the audacious daytime shooting of a strident government faultfinder, a killing that staggered the kingdom's fixed in rights group. 

Oeuth Ang, an unemployed ex-warrior who calls himself "Meet to Kill", shot Kem Ley in the head while his casualty was having a morning espresso at a Phnom Penh petrol station in July. 

He had told the court he shot Kem Ley over a property arrangement that turned sour which saw him hand the extremist $3,000 — more than twofold Cambodia's normal yearly wage. 

Supporters of Kem Ley have thrown uncertainty over the obvious intention, in a nation where deaths of government adversaries and arrive and ecological activists are very normal. 

Conveying the decision, Judge Leang Samnath said Oeuth Ang, 44, was "sentenced to life detainment for planned murder and ownership of a weapon without authorization".
